Environmental Education Work:
Environmental Management:
In an effort to train future environmental
managers, I worked with Audubon Society
executives to develop and implement a ten
week environmental training program.
Using Chicago’s historic Jackson Park as
our study area, we taught the participants
about the different fields that exist within the
environmental realm. Students learned about
ecosystems, marketing, community engagement,
social justice and environmental law.
Students were required to perform environmental
research, collect data and relay their findings
to community members.

Ecology Toolkit:
The toolkit is a training manual that is used
to help those new to community engagement
learn about how to plan environmental events.
We created the manual in such a way that it could be used
as an interactive reference tool.
The manual offers examples of experiential
educational lesson plans and worksheets that
can be used to organize the educator’s thoughts
and ideas.

Biological Science:
In this course students study the biology
of a neighborhood botanical center. We teach
such subjects as: the importance of bio-diversity, the role
plants play in ecosystems, the connections between
humans, the land and animals. In all, study of the
environment will take place right in their neighborhood
on land with which they come into contact daily.

Ecosystem Studies:
Children, adults and community members are taken
to Forest Preserves in the Chicagoland area in order
to learn more about natural ecosystems and environments.
As a means of engagement, hikes are brought to life with
the addition of art projects. Whether they are making prints
or creating art with tissue paper, participants are allowed to
re-imagine the nature they have seen along the trail.
Close attention is paid to the birds, the land, bugs and
other animals that they encounter.

Environmental Law Work:
Environmental Energy Initiative
In the hopes of connecting communities and encouraging the
use of alternative energy systems like solar and wind, the
Sierra Cub created their Cool Cities program. Researchers like myself,
spoke with city managers in order to collect energy usage data on all
the counties in Illinois. The information would be taken to the state
legislature in order to work on clean energy initiatives.

Environmental Justice:
Southeast Side Environmental Group
A grassroots environmental group, living in the midst
of PETCOKE, the fine grey dust that is a by-product of
the coal production process, wanted an app that allowed community
members to report the blowing about of PETCOKE dust.
The app connects directly to the cities 311 reporting system,
thus making environmental participation easy for residents.
Data collection also allowed residents to demand change.
I worked to create the user interface for the app.

Socially Responsible Investing:
Many people want to invest in environmentally conscious ways.
This is where Socially Responsible Investing comes into play.
I have created a primer that teaches how to find investments,
how to research companies and how to distinguish between companies
that are truly environmentally conscious and those that are “green washing”.
